Dear Friends and Valued Members,

The mild winter has us looking forward to spring and thoughts of renewal and growth. It also signals the time for us to join or renew Southlands memberships.   As we reflect upon 2011 it was filled with both significant challenges and accomplishments. The fire in Deb Dows’ main house was a tragic loss for us. Yet out of that loss, we gained a closer attachment to our history as a foundation for the future.  On the positive side, we broke ground on a new outdoor ring, opened our indoor viewing area, and feted the holidays with our very successful Gala.

As most of you are aware, our status as a not-for-profit 501 (c) 3 comes with great responsibility to our community. We work to provide educational programs that build a connection between people and the land and animals around them. Our new Horse Masters program, emphasizes a holistic approach to learning about the horses that bring us such joy.  In the context of our financial responsibilities, the Board has been working closely with Allison on a wide range of detailed operational analyses. We have been rigorously reviewing our expenses and revenues, and. while we continue to work to manage our costs, there are areas where we will need to make adjustments to pricing.  Having said this, we will always strive to be accessible to all members of our community.

The support of our members is critical to Southlands’ success. Your membership contributions are an acknowledgement that you believe in and support our Mission:

to provide a historical and agrarian connection to the community, and to cultivate a respect and love for the land and its animals through education, conservation, and outdoor recreation.

Your contributions also provide an annual source of funding to maintain practices of land conservation and management, and to offer new and ongoing educational programs.

Through your membership donation, you are directly supporting the mission of The Southlands Foundation and helping it to thrive as we continue to improve our grounds and grow our services.  Please remember, the membership donation benefits you as a tax deduction and that we qualify for many corporate gift matching programs.

With thanks,

Debbie Beatrice
