Scholarship Program

The Southlands Foundation has always attracted a very loyal and caring group of people and through their generosity the Jacob Zimmer Scholarship Fund was established.  This fund allows young riders and adults to begin, or continue, to further their riding education.  It is our hope that they will develop the same kind of love for horses and horse sports that Jacob Zimmer had and that they will carry it with them always.

Those who knew Jacob Zimmer would describe him as the epitome of what Deb Dows would call a “Southlands chick.”  He was a second generation student at Southlands, following his mother and aunts who rode as children and teenagers.  He participated in a variety of disciplines from horse shows to hunting and eventing.  The common thread was always the wonderful attitude, the smile, and a love for the animals.  Even with school and travel there remained a loving, loyal attachment to Southlands.  For Jacob, the horse was more important than the competition or ribbon.  Jacob participated in every Southlands event from leaf hunts and gymkhanas to horse shows and clinics with international trainers.

Southlands has a long history of teaching the classic fundamentals of safe and sound horsemanship to children and adults alike.  Through dedicated fundraising each year, we are able to offer a limited number of scholarships to those who might not otherwise be able to enjoy the thrill of riding.
