Warmer temperatures and longer days bring
busy times to Southlands
and we can't wait! |
We
are proud to announce that we received a matching grant from the New
York State Barn Restoration & Preservation Grant Program in the amount
of $32,500 for the South Barn. I would like to thank Southlands member
Kim Barke for devoting her time and talent to writing such a wonderfully
competitive grant proposal. We have applied in the past, but with no
success. This money will be used to secure the foundation of the South
Barn. The South Barn committee is looking into possible uses for this
wonderful building.
Brenda Klaproth and her committee are working very hard on organizing
and archiving all the historical papers, pictures, artwork and
information left by Mrs. Dows. It is a big job, but a very important
one. They are having fun looking back through time. If you would like to
help, please contact the office.
The Annual Meeting is scheduled for Saturday, June 16. Please mark your
calendars and plan to attend. It is important to us to have input from
the membership as to how we can continue to improve our services and
programs and to let you know our plans for the future.
Kathryn Windley has beautiful oil on canvas paintings of Southlands
scenes on display in the office. Proceeds from each sale come directly
to us!
Thank you, Kathryn. |

Programs |
Information is out for our summer programs. We are running both mounted
and unmounted day sessions and are very excited about both. Please see
the website or call the office to have an application mailed to you.
Cynthia Baer will be the Guide for the unmounted program. She is
currently a teacher at Church Street Nursery School. She has extensive
experience as a Girl Scout leader, camp counselor, and art coordinator
at a summer camp in the Adirondacks. She is a practicing illustrator and
an EMT. She is already hard at work planning the program. She plans to
be here for the Easter Fun Day on April 7, so please say hello and help
her feel welcome here at Southlands.
We are thrilled and proud to be collaborating with Reinhard Teetor for
the outside horse show program. Reinhard is a well-known trainer,
instructor and course designer in the Westchester, Putnam, and Dutchess
County areas. Many of Reinhard's clients have gone on to become
champions, reserve champions and class winners at a long list of
well-known Hunter/Jumper venues from the Hampton Classics, to HITS, to
Devon, to Washington to Holland and Germany.
Please let your instructor know if you are interested in riding with
Reinhard. You don't have to show to benefit! |

Easter Fun Day, April 7
This is a day that we give back
to the community. We have an egg hunt (bring your own basket) and pony
rides. There is a volunteer sign-up on the bulletin board outside the
office. If you are not available on April 7th, we always need plastic
eggs and wrapped candy to fill them. We really need someone to play the
Easter Bunny who is at least 5'4". If you have other ideas on how to
make this a great day, please contact Colleen. |
|
Sundays at Southlands
Memorial weekend through Columbus weekend.
This program was conceived as a
means to open ourselves up more to the community and let more people
come to enjoy this magnificent property and all that it has to offer. We
will have the East Barn open with a petting zoo and pony rides. There
will also be special activity days such as guided nature walks and
demonstrations. We will need a lot of volunteers and hope many of you
will participate. It could be a great way for your family to spend a
Sunday afternoon. Please see Colleen for more details.
We will be having our Under the Stars party this year on Saturday, July
21st. If you are interested in helping with this or have suggestions for
bands, please let Colleen know. This is always a great event, so please
mark your calendars and tell your friends. |

Administration |
Scholarship applications are due by May 1st. Please encourage anyone you
might know, juniors as well as adults, to apply for a scholarship if
they might not otherwise be able to have a riding experience.
Scholarships are also awarded to clients for summer program and horse
shows.
Membership renewal letters will continue to be sent out quarterly.
Please be sure to keep your membership current. This source of revenue
is vital to helping support the ever- increasing costs of utilities,
fuel and delivery surcharges. Please be assured we are constantly
checking prices to be sure we are spending our money wisely. Many of you
have added a little extra, sometimes a lot extra, to your membership
donations. Thank you!!
We are going to implement a new lesson package beginning April 1st or
with your next package purchase. We will be going to a 5-week session
(lessons must be taken within six weeks) and the cost will be $175.00
for a weekday package and $195.00 for a weekend package. The office will
attempt to notify you when it is time for a new package, but please help
us by keeping track as well. There will continue to be $5.00 charge per
lesson for any lesson that has to be billed.
We will also continue to take credit cards, but please consider paying
by check or cash so that we receive the entire amount. We lose nearly 5%
of each credit card transaction.
Remember we do have a 24 hour cancellation policy. This enables to be
able to fill the time slot and keep the revenue rolling in. |

The
Horse-Human Relationship |
|
"Kids can soar
through the air, gallop at an inconceivable pace, make turns like a
Ferrari, all on something that is a living, breathing friend.
This friend won't go to the mall and will never offer up an opinion on
the latest Britney Spears gossip. Instead, they offer a whole lot more.
It is a quiet partnership, one that forces kids (and us) to find a way
to communicate with one another, without the easy use of a keypad. It
takes work, but the reward is huge.
And adults are just as enthralled. Horses represent the anti-9-5 life
and provide a different kind of challenge and reward - one that I
daresay is more real."
