The Southlands Foundation ~ Summer 2005 Update This update is long overdue! Needless to say, our summer has been very busy. We've been proud to host clinicians Eric Horgan, Michael Page, Debbie Bowman, Darren Graziano, and Paul Striberry with the Omega Institute. We've had a couple of horse shows, six weeks of Summer Program (which included two weeks of a Youth Program for non-riders), the HITS luncheon, the Under the Stars party and our regular lesson schedule here at the farm, not to mention all the away shows that our members and horses have been participating in and doing quite well! Thank you to everyone who attended and/or sent donations for the Under the Stars party. It was a beautiful night and we have the pictures to prove it courtesy of Jennifer Haughey. Please stop by the office when you have time to see the beautiful album she put together for us. Special thanks to Kathryn Windley, Jeannie Garland, Mona & Fred Payton, Elise Quasebarth, Susan Cotter, Katie Cerulli, Eric Timberlake and crew, and the Southlands crew (which includes the camp participants who rolled all the silverware) who made time to help in between all their regular duties! We are so proud to let you know that Natalie Grow and Fancy participated in the Pony Club Nationals in Lexington, Virginia at the C-2 level the first week of August. She and her team finished in third place overall with a first place and perfect score in the Horse Management section. Individually, she finished thirteenth out of 52 riders. CONGRATULATIONS NATALIE!!!!! In a fundraising effort, we are asking for your artistic capabilities and your love for our program. Adults and juniors can participate in creating your own note cards to be used as holiday cards, thank you cards, or for any occasion. The information is in the office, so please stop by to get your packet, or we can mail one to you if necessary. I would also like to run a contest for the Southlands holiday card. They would make great gifts for anyone on your shopping list!!! The cards come 20 in a set for $20 and the proceeds will benefit Southlands. Please participate!!!!! On Friday, September 23rd the Rhinebeck Chamber of Commerce will be holding their annual fundraiser here under a tent much like we have for the Under the Stars party. The proceeds go to the Holiday lighting project and parade in Rhinebeck. The ticket price is $85.00 and includes heavy hors d'oeuvres, cocktails, live music for dancing, and both a live and silent auction. It should be a fun night for a good cause because we all enjoy the beautiful lights, and it would be great to have a Southlands contingent! I will be sending invitations to our membership. Speaking of galas, our annual Holiday Gala is scheduled for Saturday, November 19th at the Dutchess Golf and Country Club again. I would love to have some new and exciting items for the auction this year. Some items that seem to do well at other events I have been to are time-share vacations, ports and theater tickets, and jewelry. If anyone has access to any of these things, remember they are fully tax deductible donations! We are having a Jumper Schooling show on Friday, August 19th at 5:00 and a Dressage Show and Combined Test on Saturday, September 10th. We love to have volunteers on those days if you are available!!! I am so pleased to report that the therapeutic riding program under the leadership of Nancy King and Randi Carlson is really gaining momentum. It is amazing to see how they work with the clients and the horses and then how it all works together. I am really proud that this is a service we are now able to provide our community and I think it will continue to grow! This program is another opportunity for volunteering if you are interested. We are pleased to welcome Jim Buhler to the office staff. He is in the office on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and can answer your accounting questions. Thank you to everyone who has renewed your membership for this quarter and welcome to those who are new members. We will continue to send out renewal notices quarterly.
