To our Friends of Southlands,
I’m incredibly excited and deeply honored to step into the role of Executive Director at The Southlands Foundation. Southlands has been a part of my life for many years—my daughter Emily rode and boarded her horse, Sheba, here, and through her, I came to know just how special this place is. Over time, I’ve had the chance to serve on the Board of Directors and to volunteer with programs like Samaritan-Daytop and the Anderson Center for Autism, and each experience has only deepened my appreciation for what Southlands offers. After a long career as a senior executive at IBM, I’m thrilled to bring my energy and experience to a place that feels like home. I can’t wait to work alongside this wonderful community to help Southlands continue to thrive.
If you’ve had the privilege of visiting us at The Southlands Foundation recently, you’ve likely noticed the renewed energy around the property—a record number of entrants at our May 17 show, new boarder clients, new plantings around our beautiful grounds, and a sense of pride that runs as deep as our history. These improvements are just the beginning, and they’re only possible because of people like you. Southlands has been a cornerstone of the Rhinebeck community for generations. Our mission as set forth by Deborah Dows is simple but powerful: to enrich lives through meaningful connections with animals, nature, and one another. Today, we are writing to ask for your support to continue that mission.
With heartfelt thanks,
Kathy McGettrick

Sustaining Our Beloved Herd
Our school horses are the heart of Southlands. Your support ensures they receive the best care—balanced diets, proper veterinary attention, and a safe, comfortable home. This year, two of our longtime equine partners, George and Lancaster, are ready to enjoy a well-earned retirement. With your help, we can give them the dignified and peaceful rest they deserve after years of service to our riders.
Investing in Our Infrastructure
Our historic facility—like any good home—needs love and upkeep. Capital improvements such as new, larger barn windows will ensure our facilities are safe, functional, and welcoming for years to come. These upgrades enhance the experience for both horses and humans alike.
Supporting Our Community Programs
Southlands proudly partners with organizations like Ramapo for Children, Anderson Center for Autism, and Samaritan-Daytop Village to provide healing, growth, and joy through equine experiences. These programs offer hope and connection to individuals who benefit immensely from therapeutic programs and time spent in nature. Your gift directly supports these efforts.
Beautifying the Grounds
The new plantings and landscaping around the property reflect the vibrancy and care that define Southlands. Every contribution helps us continue making Southlands a beautiful, accessible place for learning, community, and connection.
Membership is more than a contribution—it’s a statement
It says that you believe in preserving green space, supporting youth development, and honoring the bond between people and horses. Whether you’re renewing your membership or joining for the first time, your support makes all the difference. Please consider giving generously. Together, we can safeguard the legacy of The Southlands Foundation and ensure it thrives for generations to come. If you believe in the power of horses to change lives—now is the time to give. Your membership truly makes a difference.
